When choosing their new 6-Series Gran Turismo, customers have the option of either a gasoline or diesel mill. The petrol-powered flavors come in the form of the 630i and 640i, while diesel-fed models are limited to the 630d. Until now, that is, as BMW has just unveiled its base 620d variant.

Now don’t let the “base” moniker throw you off as this one packs the familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel motor with BMW’s TwinPower turbo tech. This is the same engine used in offerings like the newly-launched X2 xDrive20d M Sport X that puts out 190hp and 400Nm of torque. It is likewise mated to an 8-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox.

In this application, it allows the swoopy 6-Series Gran Turismo to race to 100kph from rest in just 7.9 seconds before hitting a 220kph top speed. Sure, those numbers aren’t exactly fire-breathing yet they are more than decent enough for most people. Moreover, the main point of the new lump is fuel economy and lower emissions.

This being a BMW, clients can opt for stiffer suspension setups, all-wheel steering, and that nifty Executable Drive System that employs Anti Rol Stabilization for improved handling. Yes, BMW still endows its base models with Sheer Driving Pleasure.

As always, the new BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo’s 620d variant will first be sold in Germany. This will be followed by other markets later on.
