Volkswagen has had a long-standing tradition of producing open-air models. The Beelte is one of the world’s favorite convertibles. And the Golf (or Rabbit in some markets) has likewise captured the hearts of many motorists.  The German brand is set to continue its open-top love affair as it has confirmed that another new model is set for production within the next few years.

The new model, Volkswagen says, will be an SUV. Yes, the Volkswagen Supervisory Board has given the green light for the new T-Roc-based cabriolet, which is slated for production in 2020. But why another Sport Utility Vehicle, you ask?

Volkswagen claims that this type of vehicle has taken the world by storm. The Tiguan, for instance, has sold around 720,000 units, ranking it among the top 10 best-selling models in the world, as well as one of the top three SUVs in the business. Volkswagen sees its potential and will invest around 80 million Euros just to build the T-Roc cabriolet and other similar models.

The German marque is likewise set to expand its SUV lineup to 20 nameplates within the next few years. The T-Roc cabriolet Is just one of these, giving the subcompact offering a bit more style and differentiating it from the pack.

While there are no further details about the VW T-Roc cabriolet just yet, VW says that it will be one adventurous model—just like the base vehicle. It will be the kind of vehicle that will allow its owner to take it anywhere, this time with a bit of sunshine to boot.

Expect to see the Volkswagen T-Roc-based cabriolet sometime in 2020.
