The Volvo Ocean Race Rides Into the Waters of Hong Kong for the Very First Time

Volvo has always been known as a car company that makes some of the safest vehicles on the road. Yet true Volvo aficionados will know that the Swedish brand is also a rider on the high seas, sponsoring events such as the famed 44-year old Volvo Ocean Race. After all, Sweden is full of islands that require a lot of sailing in order to get around.

For the first time in its colorful history, the Volvo Ocean Race made a stopover in Asia’s world city, Hong Kong. Docked at the Kai Tak Runway Park from 17-23 January 2018, were seven 65-foot yachts that brought a different kind of vibe to spectators and everyone who laid eyes on them. Members of the Volvo Alumni Golf Cup 2017, winners of the All-Aboard Holiday promo, and executives and friends of Volvo Philippines were all on board to witness this historic event.

Apart from playing host, the picturesque city’s Sun Hung Kai/Scalawag Team also joined the race for the first time. It didn’t just make history but even took top honors in Leg 4 of the adrenaline-charged race.

Aside from simply racing, however, this year’s Volvo Ocean Race will sail through 83,000kms of our world’s oceans to gather meteorological and oceanographic data that will hopefully help combat the growing problem of ocean plastic pollution. Besides this, it will take a proactive role in fighting this problem by:

  • Reducing or even eliminating  singleuse plastic during the race and in the Race Village
  • Embark on educational and communication campaigns that will help spread the message of Ocean Health around the world.
  • Undertake science programs to help solve the problem, utilizing each of the 65ft yatchts that participate in the race as science laboratories.

And of course, the event would not have been complete without a few of the Special Edition Volvos that proudly showed off what the brand has to offer. These included the Volvo V90 Cross Country Ocean Race Edition, Volvo V90 Plug-in Hybrid, the Volvo S90 Excellence and Inscription Editions, and the newly-launched Volvo XC40. Plus, a rollercoaster-like ride that ahd four car-occupant Volvos on hand allowed visitors to experience the various hallmarks of the world renowned car brand—such as roadholding, torsional rigidity, and of course, safety.

All these truly show that Volvo cares for those around it—whether on the road or on the high seas.
