Since its inception in 1979, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been the symbol of a go-anywhere vehicle clad in style and luxury. Sure, the design hasn’t changed much over the years. But that’s not a bad thing as it retains its overall character.
But even as the German luxury marque prepares to unveil an all-new G next month at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the erstwhile SUV remains a style and off-road icon akin to its forbearers. While Mercedes hasn’t exactly spilled the beans on what it will look like, it did say that it keeps the iconic profile. What it did reveal is what’s inside—the all-new cabin.
The most obvious change is the dashboard. It’s now akin to what you’d see in luxury sedans such as the E- and S-Class. In fact, things like the flat-bottom steering wheel (a first for the G-Class) come straight from the said cars.
Then there are the large 12.3-inch screens that can be seen on the instrument cluster and again on the center stack. These house pertinent vehicle and infotainment data. They are controlled by the steering-wheel-mounted buttons and the COMMAND controller.
