With every new generation BMW 5-Series, the model that is arguably most awaited has an M attached to its name. The M5 has been the pinnacle of performance and desirability that all other sedans aspire to be when they grow up. But while the latest 5er doesn’t have the M5 in its arsenal just yet, BMW has given us the next best thing: the BMW M550i xDrive.
Yes, the BMW M550i xDrive combines the everyday luxury that the 5-Series possesses with sporty bits straight from the M GmbH parts bin The main highlight is the 4.4-liter, M Performance-tuned V8 with double VANOS variable valve timing, TwinPower, and other goodies. These make for 462hp and 650Nm.
Mated to an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox, the car can rocket from 0-100kph in a sports car-like 4 seconds. Drivers can even dial in Sport and Sport+ modes to change steering, throttle, and suspension settings with a more engaging character. And yes, the intelligent all-wheel drive, though having a rear drive bias, provides more than ample traction even in the most slippery of surfaces. Capping things off are the M Sport brakes with Blue Metallic calipers that don’t just look good but provide powerful stopping force—perfect for washing off all that speed.
Being a BMW, safety is top notch, with driver assistance systems like evasion aid, cross traffic alert, and electronic speed limiter, among many others. It’s responsible fun at its best. Plus, it has got the looks to match, with niceties like Cerinum Grey colored twin kidney grille, front air intake M-performance bars, and Air Breathers, the chic Shadow Line, and the Black chrome exhaust tips. The look is finished off by an M Performance rear spoiler with Gurney flap that optimizes airflow and looks really awesome.
Inside, passengers will be treated to Black Dakota leather-upholstered M sports seats, an M sports steering wheel, and aluminum pedals and strips. Illuminated door sills with M550i xDrive lettering invite everyone to come in and drive.
At present, the M550i xDrive is the top dog in the BMW 5-Series range. By the looks of it, it seems more than worthy to carry the M name.
