Road safety is fast becoming a major concern these days.Studies reveal that motorcycle riders, for instance, have a higher chance of getting into an accident—around 50 percent greater risk. And the sad reality is that many use this form of transport for its affordability.

The Makati Elementary School is one of the institutions where many of the students are brought to and picked up from school by their parents with a motorcycle. This is why Chevron Philippines Inc, (CPI) marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants, decided to hold is annual Week of Caring during the start of October.

The main highlight of this year’s activities was a role-playing game where grade 5 and 6 students got the chance to experience the good and not-so-good aspects of being a road user. They likewise learned the consequences of such no-nos as drunk driving, speeding, not crossing at the proper crosswalk, not wearing your helment, and the like. All this in the hopes of starting them young.

To help them out, around 34 CPI volunteers took the time to instill this knowledge in a fun and enjoyable way. Chevron volunteers even gave away helmets, which the kids and their parents can use while on their motorbike.  After all, they believe that doing so in such a manner should prove more effective in making them responsible citizens.

The Chevron Week of Caring is a five-day program undertaken by volunteers from its employees and other stakeholders. It has been holding the advocacy campaign for some nine years now.
