Did You Know That You Could Be Driving in an Inefficient Manner?

It seems that many Filipinos think they know how to drive properly. While they may know the basics, the sad reality is most folks don’t know a thing about driving efficiently. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, there is a huge difference between simply tooling from point A to point B and actually making the most of each drop of fuel in your car’s tank.

This was confirmed by a recent survey conducted by Ford Motor Company that comprised 783 Filipino drivers who gave their own take on how they drive. Around 37% weren’t aware that loading their car with all sorts of clutter could adversely affect fuel consumption. And with most folks turning their vehicle into a mobile closet, the rise in fuel consumption is inevitable.

Then there are those who said that it’s okay to accelerate harshly as well braking just as abruptly. But the 34% of respondents aren’t aware that such a practice is a no-no when it comes to saving fuel. The trick is to keep it smooth. And so do one in five Filipinos, who think that it’s okay to leave the engine idling. Actually, shutting it down is the better option. And with most new cars packing Auto Strt/Stop technology, there’s no excuse not to temporarily switch off the motor while waiting for lengthy periods.

When it comes to where you drive, a huge 57% said they didn’t know driving in hilly terrain can affect how much fuel their car consumes. And climate, too, can lessen how much fuel your vehicle uses. Cold (82%) and warm (57%) can each take their toll on consumption, as it would take longer to warm up, and put more load on a vehicle’s engine, especially with the use of the airconditioning, respectively.

But did you know that some modern convenience features can actually help save gas? Eighty-four (84) percent weren’t aware that cruise control can help save fuel as it assists in maintaining a steady cruising speed. Global Positioning Satellite (GPS), meanwhile, can also aid in saving fuel as it allows one to plan their route more easily.

With most Filipinos dressing up their car to look cool, around 85% didn’t know that putting stuff like bodykits and sports tires can only increase fuel usage. It may look fast but it will also eat up your fuel savings just as quickly.

But whatever you do, don’t be like the 41% who said they didn’t know that regular maintenance is helpful in saving fuel. Not only will having your car serviced regularly save you costly repairs in the future, it can also assist you in your quest to increase fuel consumption.

So keep these tips in mind. They could just be your best bet to lessen your visits to the filling station.
