Lexus Wants to Redefine Luxury With the New LS Flagship Sedan

Folks old enough may recall the original Lexus LS flagship sedan launched in 1990. That car didn’t just unveil a new model; it launched an entirely new brand into the luxury car market. The LS of that time set new standards in comfort, smoothness, and quality, rivaling the best out there.

Fast-forward to 2017 and the fifth-generation Lexus LS has broken cover at the ongoing North American International Auto Show. While past LS flagship sedans were more on the staid and conservative side, this new model has dynamic and sporty written all over it. The low stance and flowing coupe-like roofline all hint at a more exciting top-spec model.

To match this vibe, the new Global Architecture for Luxury (GA-L) platform, first seen on the sexy Lexus LC Coupe, underpins the latest LS. The lower center of gravity, extensive use of lightweight materials, and a wider stance all help give the car better driving characteristics. This is complemented with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that puts out 415hp and 600Nm of torque. Paired with a first-ever 10-speed automatic, the large sedan rockets from 0-100km/h in a quick 4.5 seconds.

While Omotenashi (the Japanese concept of pampering) is still very much a part of the LS, drivers can choose between Normal Sport, and Sport+ via simple flick of a switch. This, together with the new Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, make for a truly sporty yet still comfy ride. Everything from steering, suspension brakes, and other drive systems are easily controlled to suit one’s preference.

Being a top-tier sedan, the Lexus LS hasn’t forgotten about style and comfort. The low-slung stance is further enhanced by the extended wheelbase, allowing occupants in the rear to stretch out in total comfort. A large, outer-slide moonroof, and a new interpretation of the trademark Spindle grille with new texture add to the overall character. Plus, a wide selection of 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels complete the look.

As for the luxury part, think 28-way (yes, 28!) power-adjustable front seats, complete with heating, cooling, massage, and ottoman functions. The rear seats even come with optional Shaitsu massage and can be reclined at a 48-degree angle for true first-class luxury seating. And since the car sits lower to the ground for better handling, an access mode raises it a few millimeters to aid ingress and egress.

And of course, safety is also part of the package. One of the most notable features of the Lexus Safety System+ is the Advanced Safety Package, more specifically, the Intuitive Pedestrian Detection. This piece of kit can warn drivers if pedestrian is in the lane and steer around the “danger” to avoid collision. It will then return to the lane once it’s clear.

With the new Lexus LS, it looks like Lexus has upped the ante once more.
