There is this age-old saying that goes something like, “try and try until you…” Okay, it’s try until you succeed. And we’re pretty sure no one can relate to this more than Sunawr Ali, a Singaporean who recently won the prestigious 2016 Subaru Palm Challenge with an impressive time of 75 hours and 58 minutes.
While this may sound like a feat, what makes Sunawr Ali more admirable is his sheer determine. This is his 12th time to join the tilt, finishing as high as second place in 2013 This time around, it was a battle of the second-placers, specifically between himself and 2014 runner-up, 38-year old Analiza Bte Moktar (also from Singapore), who fell short of his time a mere minute at 75 and 57 minutes. Coming in third place is Alex Nablasca, 34, from the Philippines who clocked in at 73 hours and 50 minutes.
For his efforts, Sunawr will take home the grand prize, a brand-new Subaru XV 1.6 I-S. And as for what he will do when he gets home after grueling days of competing, he says that all he wants to do is “eat some fried chicken”.
Analiza and Alex, meanwhile, won’t go home unrewarded. They, too, will get S$5,000 and S$2,000, respectively. Speaking of rewards, the Philippine team, despite only fielding nine participants after one of their colleagues had to back out at the last minute, garnered the Country Team Winner title. Plus, most other countries will likewise receive S$10,000 that will be divided equally among all the members.
The prizes were awarded by Mr Glenn Tan, Executive Director of Tan Chong International Ltd, and Ms. Debra Soon, Head of the Family English Segment, Mediacorp.
