The recent earthquakes that struck Central Italy have left the region in a state of ruin. Major buildings, most of which are centuries old, have been destroyed while scores of people were either killed, injured, or reported missing. Yet despite the devastation, all is not lost.
One of the rays of hope that shines through comes courtesy of Ferrari. Yes, the very same Italian supercar maker that produces some of the world’s most coveted driving machines has generously donated a one-of-a-kind LaFerrari, which was auctioned off for charity. And in a successful bid, the lucky owner paid a whopping $7 million!
While that amount may seem exorbitant, keep in mind that it is for a worthy cause—the reconstruction of earthquake-stricken Central Italy. The auction, which was held together with RM Sotheby’s and the National Italian American Foundation’s Earthquake Relief Fund, was truly meant to help the country in need.
Besides fetching the highest-ever amount paid for a 21st century automobile at auction, the special LaFerrari also boasts of a few niceties that set it apart from its “regular” Prancing Horse brethren. The distinctly Italian exterior, painted in red, gets a white dream line on the hood and rear window, along with a commemorative plaque and a small imprint of the Italian flag on the hood–to remind everyone that this unique automobile is a gift from Ferrari to its beloved Italy.
