We all know the Mazda MX-5 to be one of the more stylish roadsters in the business. Since its introduction in 1989, the four generations of the little open-top Mazda have wowed fans with its good looks and of course, driving prowess. And believe it or not, both variants of its current iteration are likewise award winners.
The Mazda MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback) has just garnered the Red Dot Best of the Best design award, bestowed upon it last July 4, 2017 at the Aalto Theater in Essen, Germany. The prestigious trophy was awarded by a distinguished panel of 39 designers, professors, and journalists who choose the best among a wide array of products. This year, a total of 102 winners were picked from more than 5,500 entries—showing just how tough the competition is.
The Mazda MX-5, particularly in RF trim, combines the joys of open-air motoring with the security and practicality of a power-operated three-piece hardtop. The roof can easily be opened or closed in a quick 13 seconds, providing all-weather protection and giving occupants the freedom to go topless when they feel like it.
The MX-5 RF gives Mazda its sixth Red Dot prize. The Mazda6 took home the award in 2013, followed by the Mazda3 in 2014. The next year saw Mazda take home 3 awards for the CX-3, Mazda2, and the MX-5 soft top.
All these awards simply prove that good looks, functionality, ergonomics, and innovation can indeed come together. And win awards while they’re at it.
