Mercedes-Benz has always had a thing for open-top motoring. The SL is practically an icon of the automotive industry. Then there are the smaller SLC and the luxuriously large S-Class Cabriolet. But what does the future hold for the three-pointed star when it comes to roadsters and cabrios?
Mercedes-Maybach shows us its take on the future with the Vision 6 Cabriolet. The long (at almost 6 meters in length) two-seat open-top is a return to form, mixed with modern styling cues. This can be seen in the flowing hood that is complemented by a rounded body shape.
What gives the Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6 a bit of visual flair is the sharp character line that runs up on top across the length of the body. This makes it look less slab-sided. Then there is that imposing Maybach radiator grille up front, flanked by sleek headlights that look more like slits than lights. The whole theme is finished off by a “boat tail” that somehow hints at this car’s wafting nature.
Just like the exterior, the cabin is a fine mix of classic and futuristic touches. The former can be seen in the analogue gauges that were purposely placed to give drivers a sense of nostalgia and the utmost luxury. The latter, meanwhile, is literally projected onto the windscreen as additional information (such as vehicle data and navigation) shown on a pair of head-up displays. Needless to say, the finest materials are used in the Vision 6’s interior.
The Mercedes-Maybach Vision6 Cabriolet will be powered by four electric motors positioned at each wheel. Yes, this will be a purely electric vehicle. The underfloor battery will generate a total system output of 750hp and is touted to have a 600km range.
Mercedes-Maybach will present the Vision 6 Cabriolet Concept at this year’s Monterey Car Week, which runs from 15 to 20 August in Monterey, California. It will likewise make a grand appearance at the Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach, California.
