The recently concluded 2017 Tokyo Motor Show in Japan has showcased a number of exciting new, current, and upcoming models in the global auto industry. Among these include an array of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and fully-electric vehicles from such brands as Isuzu, Nissan, and Mitsubishi.
Firstly, Isuzu brought out its electrified versions of the N-Series trucks, as well as its EFuso and ECanter light duty trucks. Nissan, on the other hand, highlighted its Leaf and Note small electric vehicles, while Mitsubishi gave visitors a glimpse of its Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle).
Evidently, the future looks bright for plug-in hybrid vehicles and fully-electrified cars. But most importantly, everything in the global automotive industry is set to become brighter with the continued development of these types of vehicles that are safer, more high-tech, and more environment-friendly.
Seeing the prominent display of PHEV and electric vehicles in the said week-long Japanese motor show, the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) shared its delight, stating that the rising demand for such vehicles could not have come in a better time than now.
Case in point, it’s referring to the PUV Modernization Program, a program which aims to level up the Philippines’ iconic jeepney to a safer, more modern, and more environment-saving ride for the everyday commuter. Detailing the connection between the Tokyo Motor Show display and the said modernization program, EVAP said that one of the key points in the program is that the modern PUV should have a Euro 4-compliant diesel engine, a hybrid, or a fully-electric motor as its powertrain.
Solidifying this is the recently-concluded Philippine Auto Parts Expo by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Philippine Parts Makers Association (PPMA). In the said expo, a total of 16 EcoPUV prototypes were on display, including models from Centro Manufacturing Corporatyion, a loca truck body building company.
The next step would be the pilot testing of these vehicles in actual jeepney routes to find out what adjustments need to be made before mass production. If deemed successful, EVAP member companies will target about 10% of the total 200,000 new EcoPUVs to be upgraded and modernized over the next five to six years.
