After tons of teasers scattered across the internet, BMW finally debuts its much-awaited i8 Roadster at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show.

More than just being a droptop version of the cool and chic hybrid sports car, the BMW i8 Roadster packs stylish updates and cool features that befit its innovative stature. The  larger kidney grille, lower hood, flat underbody, and stream flow air ducts found in between the rear lights all make for better aerodynamic efficiency.

The cabin likewise receives a few updates, consisting of a Giga full leather package with Ivory White for the Coupe and Ivory White/Black for its topless sibling. There is also a new sports steering wheel and an 8.8-inch touchscreen. The biggest change, however, is the removal of  the rear seats on the roadster.

The last bit helps to free up more space, what with the electronic soft top needing a bit more room for stowage once folded. Going open top can be achieved in a quick 16 seconds, up to speeds of 49kph. And the all-weather fabric top is complemented by 3D-printed aluminum connecting rods and loads of sound insulating material.

Besides the looks and advanced roof, the new i8 Roadster and its Coupe twin also boast of more power under the hood. The new LifeDrive architecture forms the base for both the Coupe and Convertible. The eDrive system powering both cars is composed of a three-cylinder turbo-gasoline mill that generates 228hp and 319Nm., along with an 11.6kw/h battery and electric motor that puts out 141hp and 249Nm.

Producing a total system output of 369hp, the i8 Coupe can do the 0-100kph sprint in 4.2 seconds. Its Roadster sibling does so in 4.4 ticks. And both can drive in full electric mode for up to 28kms.

The all-wheel i8 twins also allow the driver to choose between five driving modes. These are made up of hybrid drive that can do either Comfort, Sport, or Eco Pro, or all-electric drive with Comfort or Eco Pro modes.

The updated BMW i8 Coupe and Roadster make their world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which runs from November 29 to December 10, 2017. Sales begin in the second quarter of 2018.
