Four-Door Coupe Version 3.0: Mercedes-Benz CLS Enters Its Third Generation

November 30, 2017

It all began in 2003 when the first-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS created a new segment in the automotive industry. Known as the four-door coupe, the car was wide and low, just like a sports car. Yet it had the practicality of a four-door sedan.

Fast-forward to 2017 and Mercedes-Benz debuts the third-generation CLS at the Los Angeles Auto Show. While still retaining the overall low and wide profile, this one takes a few styling cues from the vaunted AMG GT sports car. The grille, for instance, is wider at the base, flanked by sharp headlights and arrow-like daytime running lights.

The shark-like forward slanting front end, along with the tapering shape of the greenhouse towards the rear give it a unique yet still functional design. Keen onlookers will also note that the new CLS employs softer shapes than its predecessors.

Just like the outside, the cabin is bold and functional at the same time. This being a Merc, it’s got loads of goodies , such as a 12.3-inch multimedia infotainment display, the latest smartphone connectivity and wireless charging systems, and ambient lighting that also includes the air vents And yes, Mercedes-Benz wanted to make things a bit more special in here by throwing an analogue clock made by IWC.

Powering the new Mercedes-Benz CLS will be a range of engines that promise potent output and fuel efficiency. There is the CLS 350d 4Matic with its 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder diesel mill that puts out 286hp and 600Nm, good for a 5.7-second 0-100kph sprint. Next is the CLS 400d 4Matic that’s got the same 3.0-liter in-line 6 mill, this time rated at 340hp and 700Nm of torque. This one can blast the four-door coupe from rest to 100kph in just 5 ticks. Finally, there is the CLS 450 4Matic, fitted with a 3.0-liter in-line gasoline motor and an electric EQ motor. It generates 367hp + 22hp from the EQ mill, and 500Nm + 250Nm. The two motors combine to help the car go from 0-100kph in just 4.8 seconds.

Apart from the brand’s AirBody suspension, the new CLS can be specified with Energizing Control that helps rejuvenate drivers on long journeys. It uses the car’s various interior appointments like climate control, steering wheel heating, lighting, and infotainment system to exude a certain mood. These moods come in the form of Freshness, Warmth, Joy, Vitality, Comfort, and a Training Mode. Each one is designed to make the driver retain his or her energy level even after a long stint behind the tiller.

And yes, there are numerous driver assistance systems that help keep occupants and other road users safe. Lane Keep Assist, Speed Limit Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control are just some of the standard fare. If these aren’t enough, one can add Adaptive Distance Control, Active Steering and Brake Assistance systems, Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, and Remote Steering Assist, just to name a few.

The third-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS debuts at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It will have its market launch in March 2018.
