Folks keeping track of the Hyundai Elantra (and there are some) may be aware that the current-generation model is already a good three years old. While the design still looks fresh, any car enthusiast will know that this is about the time for a mid-cycle refresh. And Hyundai has done just that with a nip and tuck for its erstwhile compact sedan.
The 2019 Elantra that is set to be released by North American dealerships later this year, continues the dynamic look. The headlights, hood, grille, fenders, and fascia have been revised for a bolder and more aggressive look. The rear likewise gets a tweak with the most noticeable update being the placement of the license plate that now resides on the bumper.
Stepping inside, one will notice a new AVN infotainment system for all trim levels. Standard is a 5-inch screen whle upper-spec variants get an 8-inch display. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation can be had with this setup, as well as Qi wireless phone charging. Other than these, it’s the same place as in the current iteration.
What’s new are the host of safety systems thrown in either as standard or optional extras. Forward Collision Mitigation, lane-keep assist, and driver attention assist are available on mid-spec models while higher trim levels receive goodies like forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist. This last feature warns drivers of oncoming vehicles when the door is opened upon exiting the car.
All told, it looks like Hyundai is set on upping the ante in the compact class with these new technologies and its signature style language. Question is, when will it make it to our market? And what pieces of tech will come with it? Your guess is as good as ours.
