Mercedes-Benz ushers in an electric future with the EQC 400 4Matic all-electric vehicle

It looks like the race is really on towards an electric automotive future. With brands like Porsche and Volvo putting forward their soon-to-be-released all-electric offerings recently, luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz gets its turn as it reveals the EQC 400 4Matci.

The fully-electric crossover under Merc’s electric vehicle subsidiary EQ (Electric Intelligence) combines the style, comfort, and safety of the three-pointed star with the conscientious side of motoring via an all-electric powertrain. At the heart of it all is an 80kWh lithium-ion battery that allows the vehicle to go up to 320kms on a single change. Topping up can take as little as 40 minutes using a 110kw charger.

The battery is hooked up to two electric mills that power the front and rear axles. Total system output is a healthy 408hp and 765Nm of torque. This is good for a blistering 4.9-second 0-100kph time and a 180kph top seed.

While the EQC 400 4Matic may be an electric vehicle, it doesn’t mean drivers can’t have a bit of fun. One can choose from drive modes such as Comfort, Eco, Max Range, Sport, and the Individual setting. Moreover, drivers can also choose the amount of energy regeneration using the EQC’s brakes. What’s even coolers is that recuperation can be done using the steering wheel-mounted paddles.

This being a Mercedes-Benz, luxury is naturally a given. The vaunted Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment and vehicle interface that made its debut in the latest line of Mercedes vehicles recently takes things a step further by incorporating some cool new tech. One can control various functions via Voice Control using natural speech patterns. Moreover, your EQC will do stuff like set climate control and other systems to suit your preference once it detects that you’re about to enter the vehicle.  You can also do these via the Mercedes-Benz Connected app.

While all this may sound like science-fiction, it is actually set for production come 2019. It will first be manufactured in Germany and later on in China.
