A more dynamic 2020 Toyota Corolla arrives

If you’ve been following Toyota’s design language over the past few years, you may have noticed that it has slowly ditched its conservative image in favor of a more dynamic vibe. Case in point are the new Vios, the CH-R, the Yaris, and the US version Camry. Now, the brand’s bread-and-butter sedan, the Corolla, also gets some new clothes.

Now on its 12th generation, the look is decidedly more striking than the already catchy current iteration. The slim headlights and equally thin grille complement the wide inverted lower opening (a la Toyota 86). The side has creases while the rear also looks robust. It’s no sports car by any stretch of the imagination. Yet it definitely looks more youthful.

The cabin is likewise more premium. Although Toyota says that the new car is shorter than the previous one, it retains the wheelbase and adds stuff like a standard 7-inch touchscreen atop the dash. Higher-end variants get an 8-inch unit with Apple CarPlay. The instrument cluster also receives a 4.2-ich info screen that can be upgraded to a 7-incher when choosing higher trim levels. This gives the driver a digital speedometer.

The  2020 Toyota Corola will come with either a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 139hp or a new 2.0-liter four-pot that puts out 169 horses. The larger engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a Continuously Variable Transmission with 10 preset ratios for Sport Mode. The manual gearbox, however, loses out on goodies like adaptive cruise control and lane centering assist.

Speaking of safety, all new Corollas get kit such as pre-collison warning with brake assist, automatic high beams, and lane keep assist. This is, after all, still a Corolla that caters to people from all walks of life.

Expect to see the 2020 Toyota Corolla hit dealerships in markets like the US by early next year. As for our shores, we should be getting it soon thereafter.
