Twenty five or so years ago, Subaru took a station wagon, raised the ride height, threw in its patented Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and called it the Outback. Fast-forward to 2019 and the Outback is a favorite among its stable of crossovers. Now, the Japanese company brings forth the new sixth-generation Outback at this year’s New York Auto Show.
Looking pretty much like its forbearers, the latest version gets sleeker headlights, more robust tail section, and a more rugged yet still sophisticated appearance. It’s still the look that combines the good ol’ station wagon with the attributes of a versatile crossover. Now, however, it rides on the brand’s Global Platform that promises better rigidity and crash protection.
Inside, however, is where the biggest change comes in. There is a new portrait-style 11.6-inch infotainment screen that allows one to manipulate various entertainment and vehicle functions. As with Outbacks of late, a slew of luxury amenities make for a comfortable drive even if you’re in the middle of nowhere.
This generation allows buyers to choose between a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder that puts out 182hp and 239Nm, or a new 2.4-liter turbo flat-four that produces 260 horses and 376Nm of torque. Either way, each motor is paired with a CVT and All-Wheel Drive.
As always, the new Outback comes with the marque’s patented EyeSight Driver Assist system. It’s a standard setup across the range, ensuring that all occupants remain intact and out of harm’s way.
Expect the new Subaru Outback to hit U.S. dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2019.
