There are just those times when whipping out your smartphone in public places to call someone or to book a Grab/Uber is a must. But in doing so, chances of it being stolen and its data being hacked or used in wrongful ways is quite high, given the rising number of theft-related crimes these days.
Thankfully, there’s now an app called TARA (Theft Alarm and Recovery Application) which can at least help secure the important data stored in your smartphone, should it end up in the wrong hands.
Without getting too technical, TARA is kind of like a car’s anti-theft alarm and engine immobilizer. But here’s the catch; you, as the owner of the stolen device, must have a quick and clear mind to grab another phone or borrow someone else’s device to trigger your stolen phone’s alarm and secure/destroy its data.
The rest of TARA’s capabilities is explained on the video above.
But just so you know, TARA comes with a 30-day free trial. After that, you’re required to choose between a weekly, monthly, or yearly protection service amounting to P15, P50, and P500, respectively. Moreover, its operation is also SIM card-based, meaning that it needs to use your cellphone number to do its thing.
Of note, the TARA app is only available for download via Google Play Store. It’s still on its early stages of development, so with enough time and funds, it could someday be able to protect the stolen phone’s data even if the unit is turned off, SIM-removed, reformatted, or destroyed.
