The Mercedes-Benz GLC Midsize SUV Gets Tweaked by AMG

The AMG brand is best known for tweaking stately Mercedes-Benz sedans and coupes and turning them into high-performance driving machines. In 1999, however, things changed when the boys from Affalterbach got their hands on the then-new ML SUV and turned it into the ML 55. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Merc tuning arm hopes to make history once more as it reveals the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 4Matic+ AMG GLC 63 4Matic+ Coupe, along with their S versions at the upcoming New York Auto Show 2017. The high-performance midsize SUV is distinguished from its “regular” siblings by the signature Panamericana grille up front—a styling cue first seen on the AMG GT. This, along with AMG body kits and other bits, give the SUV a semblance to the sporty family.

What really sets this one apart from the segment is the patented 4.0-liter bit-turbo direct-injection V8 that comes in two horsepower ratings. The AMG GLC 63 4Matic+ and Coupe get the 476hp and 650Nm of torque, allowing them to sprint from 0-100kph in 4 seconds. If this isn’t potent enough, buyers can opt for the AMG GLC 63 S 4Matic+ and 63 S Coupe variants that get the more powerful 510hp and 700Nm. This lets them blast to the century mark in just 3.8 ticks.

Either way, all variants are fitted with the AMG SpeedShift MCT 9-speed sports transmission and AMG Performance 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive system. This means smooth cruising and lightning-quick shifting and surefooted handling on any terrain. Plus, drivers can customize their drive with the AMG Dynamic Select program that lets them choose between Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual settings. It’s the best way to turn the GLC from family hauler to sporty SUV in a flick of a switch.

Speaking of performance, the AMG GLC 63 4Matic+, Coupe, and S models also get goodies like a rear-axle limited-slip differential, as well as high-performance brakes. This ensures sharp reflexes and the ability to wash off all that speed safely and fuss free.

And of course, the most advanced connectivity and infotainment systems and gadgets are on offer, both as standard and optional extras. Being a Merc, luxury is likewise part of the mix. It’s the best of both worlds for the whole family.
