The New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe: A Sporty Grand Tourer

With every new E-Class sedan, a coupe version naturally always follows. Today, Mercedes-Benz continues that tradition with the unveiling of the all-new E-Class Coupe, just a few months after the reveal of the sedan, wagon, and most recently, the All-Terrain variant.

The newest E-Class retains the new and modern visual identity set by the latest E, yet adds its own distinct look. The overall character is both sensual and sporty and the same time, with touches like a lower and sportier grille design, centrally-located three-pointed star, a long hood, powerdome atop that bonnet, and of course, the more muscular rear end. The greenhouse, too, is more fluid, adding to the car’s visual flair. It actually evokes a sports car vibe rather than that of a GT cruiser.

What set the new car apart are the taillights. The seemingly nondescript detail actually employs the new Welcome feature. The full LED Multibeams will light up from the inside moving outward upon unlocking the doors. The opposite will happen when locking the car. The taillight shpw actually mimics that of the equally stunning headlights.

Immediately noticeable about the new E-Class Coupe are its larger dimensions. The 4,826mm length, 1,860mm width, and 1,430mm height are much more than the model it replaces. This naturally translates to a more luxurious and spacious cabin, with more head- leg,- and shoulder room overall.

This being a Mercedes-Benz, only the highest grade materials are used throughout the interior. Moreover, innovative and high-tech goodies abound, such as the optional, 12.3-inch dual screens that appear to be one single unit—giving a Widescreen display, the Touch Control steering switches that allow easy activation of various functions at a swipe’s command, and the full LED cabin lighting, just to name a few.

The new E-Class, just like its other siblings, will be powered by a slew of engines that suit pretty much every driving style. The range includes three gasoline motors and one diesel. The gas engines consist of the E200 with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184hp and 300Nm, a more potent 245hp.370Nm version of the same motor for the E300, and the E400 4Matic with its 3.0-liter V6 putting out 333hp and 480Nm. The oil burner, on the other hand is an E220d variant with a 2.0-liter in-line four with 194hp and 400Nm. When it comes to performance, zero to 100kph sprint times range from 7.8 seconds to a quick 5.3 ticks, depending on the variant. And of course, they will be mated to the brand’s vaunted 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox.

With the E-Class Coupe’s sporty yet comfy characteristics, drivers can easily dial up the style they want, thanks to the Dynamic Select customization function. This lets one choose settings like Comfort, Eco, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. And each one can vary configurations for things like the Air Body Control, Dynamic Body Control, as well as shift points, Eco start/stop function, and throttle response, among many others. It’s total control at your fingertips.

And yes, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe comes with the latest tech to help occupants pair their smartphone to the car’s infotainment system for a safe drive. The Command Online feature lets one wirelessly integrate a smartphone not only for various call and multimedia functions but also for wires charging, for instance. It even allows the smartphone to be used as the digital key to lock and unlock the vehicle.
