Toyota Motor Corporation recently announced that it will begin selling its Fuel Cell (FC) buses in Tokyo next year. The Japanese carmaker plans to initially field around 100 FC buses in 2017. This number, however, will steadily rise over the next few years.
Toyota is targeting a large number of FC buses to be used during the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. It intends to increase awareness of such a mode of public transport as a viable and safe option. Moreover, the zero-emissions nature of these vehicles would definitely help solve the worsening pollution and global warming we are experiencing today.
Apart from providing green mobility, the FC buses, which were jointly developed with truck and bus company Hino Motors, are powerful enough to be used as a power source during emergency situations. The 9kw capacity and electricity output of 235kwh m makes for a quick energy source during those dire moments.
This isn’t the first Toyota vehicle to utilize hydrogen fuel cell technology. The Toyota Mirai has been on sale in Japan, the US, and Europe for quite some time now and offers motorists an alternative fuel source for everyday use. We just wonder when these buses will find their way to places like EDSA?
