The Volkswagen Tiguan has always been one of those compact SUVs (CUVs) that offer the premium Volkswagen vibe with the versatility and utility that the segment affords. Now, Volkswagen wants to reach out to a wider audience with the new 2018 Tiguan Long Wheelbase model.
The longer wheelbase version has increased length , along with a longer wheelbase (as the name suggests). This equates to more space inside, including the provision for an optional third row seat. Thanks to the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform, which it shares with the Atlas, the new Tiguan makes efficient use of space while still possessing easy-to-maneuver outer dimensions.
Powering the Tiguan being sold in the US market is a 2.0-liter, direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder motor with 184hp and 300Nm, mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Power is transferred to either the front wheels or all four corners using the brand’s vaunted 4Motion all-wheel drive system.
As with all VWs, the classic and contemporary looks are present. LED lighting, clean lines, and other visual cues make it sophisticated and stylish, promising to age well over time. The interior, too, gets an upscale touch with first-rate materials, along with a slew of creature comfort features that help elevate every journey.
Speaking of upscale, VW offers the optional Digital Cockpit, giving a clear and easy-to-read info center that can easily be customized to show pertinent data at a glance. It even features Connected Car platforms that help keep drivers in touch with the world while on the road—safely, of course. There are also goodies like heated steering wheel, power seats, and other niceties that make life on the road much more comfy.
This being a Volkswagen (for the US market at that), the latest in safety gear come standard. Blind spot warning, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and lane keep assistance are just some of the kit that help keep occupants and pedestrians safe.
The Volkswagen Tiguan Long Wheelbase makes its world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
