All-new Suzuki Vitara: Bringing Something Different to the Table

As more people opt for Sport Utility Vehicles these days, it’s no secret that these offerings are getting smaller by the model introduction.  Nameplates like the Ford EcoSport. Nissan Juke, Chevrolet Trax, Mitsubishi ASX, and Mazda CX-3 come to mind.

While the segment may seem over-crowded, it seems that there is always room for one more. This new entrant comes in the form of the newly-launched, fourth-generation Suzuki Vitara. The Vitara isn’t exactly a new player, as most car enthusiasts will note. In fact, it has been around for almost 30 years.

Yet for all its appeal and longevity, the Vitara somehow took the larger route, opting to compete in the compact SUV class during its second and third iterations. Suzuki, however, chose to go back to basics and downsize its erstwhile SUV and make it slug it out in the hotly-contested subcompact SUV class.

While the new Vitara may be smaller in almost every dimension, its look remains stylishly rugged. The sweptback headlights, two-slat grille, and muscular fenders all give it a simple yet striking presence. One can even order their top-spec GLX variant in two-tone colors to make it stand out from the subcompact SUV crowd.

This is what Suzuki Philippines chose to show off recently when it invited select members of the motoring media to join the Vitara Ride and Drive event. Heading up North to San Fernando, La Union, the convoy got to sample the CUV’s various driving facets and features through roughly 250kms of long highway stretches, winding mountain roads, and other driving conditions.

Here, everyone got to try the adequate power from the 1.6-liter four-cylinder motor that produces 115hp and 156Nm of torque. Mated to a quick-shifting 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters, the engine-tranny combo proved to be responsive in most dirving situations.

Sure, the new Suzuki Vitara may have given up its four-wheel drive mechanism in favor of a more fuel-efficient front-wheel drive setup. Yet is still remained stable on the highway, while its 185mm ground clearance means yu can ford light floods withut fear of getting stranded.

Apart from this, the new Vitara comes with a few features that aren’t found in most players in its class. The top-of-the-line GLX variant, for instance, comes with a large panoramic sunroof, along with an equally massive 10-inch infotainment touchscreen interface with Android interface. It allows passengers to be entertained and keep in touch with the outside world while on the move.

At P938,000 for the GL+ and P1,048,000 for the GLX, the new Suzuki Vitara brings something different to the table. It’s not a cutesy subcompact SUV, which is a good thing. Plus, the name itself means that it’s capable, even in a more urban-friendly front-wheel drive layout. It should be worth checking out if you’re in the market for such a vehicle.
