SMC Asia Car Distributors Corp. which is the Philippines’ official importer and distributor of BMW luxury vehicles, recently unveiled the all-new Z4 roadster at the same time of its launch of the 2019 3 Series. Sporting a more stylish exterior, improved interior, and everything in between, this 6th generation of the German 2-seat open-top model is set to go head-to-head with its proverbial twin brother from the East, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra A90 which will land on Philippine shores just days from now.

Externally, the Z4 checks all the boxes of what defines a classic roadster design; long hood, deployable soft top, short rear end. But looking deeper into the details reveals a sports car that comes off as “aggressively posh”, if that makes sense.

Leading the style changes is the brand’s signature kidney grille which has been increased in size to tie in with the latest BMW models. This gets flanked by a set of full LED headlights with edges that blend well with the car’s distinct side profile and character lines. The look is finished off with a sportier-designed rear end that’s highlighted by L-shaped LED tail lights and dual exhausts.

Of its centerpiece, the electric soft top, BMW claims that the driver could deploy it at speed of less than 50 km/h in just under 10 seconds, which is quite handy for when the weather suddenly lets out a downpour.

Inside the Z4 is an ensemble of amenities including a 10.25-inch driver information display and an updated infotainment system. The latter features the lates software of BMW Connected and BMW Connected drive, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, among others. In addition, this head unit is routed to a either a 10- or 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. Topping all of is a Vernasca Leather-wrapped interior with bits of alcantara trim to give it the added up-market feel.

BMW Philippines offers the Z4 in 2 kinds; the sDrive 20i and the range-topping M40i. Both cariants move with a power plant that’s shared with the GR Supra A90. The sDrive 20i sports a 2.0L twin turbocharged inline 4-cylinder motor that packs 197 hp and 320 Nm of torque to the rear wheels. On the other hand, the M40i ups the ante with a 3.0L twin turbo inline 6 that’s rated at 335 hp and 450 Nm. Both engines are governed by an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
