When we think of electric vehicles, the name Tesla usually comes to mind. That’s because this American company has been making quite a lot of noise lately. Truth be told, however, another marque has been making a name for itself globally. We refer to Build Your Dream or BYD, which today unveiled its Multi-Layered Transportation Solutions in the Philippine market.

Led by its Philippine distributor, Solar Transport and Automotive Resources (STAR) Group, China’s leading electric vehicle maker rolled out a line of electric and hybrid vehicles, buses, and even a railway offering. Utilizing its expertise in electric and hybrid solutions, BYD is set to change the automotive landscape by providing alternative energy vehicles for the Filipino.

Leading the charge is the BYD Tang, a 7-seat electric hybrid that employs two 150hp electric motors. The hybrid part comes from a 205hp 2.0-liter gasoline engine that supports the two zero-emissions battery-powered lumps. This gives the Tang a total system output of 505hp, specifically when in Hybrid Electric Sport Mode. This allows it to rocket from 0-100kph in less than 5 seconds. When not in a hurry, the car can cruise on pure electric mode for up to 80kms and be topped up using a standard 220v outlet.

BYD also took the wraps off its Pure Electric range of vehicles. The e6, which has been around for about 3 years now, gets an update. For 2018, it can go up to 400kms on a single charge. The BYD e5, meanwhile, is a sedan that will arrive later in the year. It can do the pure electric run up to 300kms before it needs to be plugged in.

Apart from the cars, the K9 electric bus will likewise enter the scene. Distributed by Columbian Motors Corporation, this one can run up to 250kms on a single charge and hit a top speed of 70kkph. This comes courtesy of its two electric motors that each produce 268 horses.  BYD is also putting forward Electric Forklifts that are aimed at the fast-growing construction sector. Using the brand’s patented lithium-ion iron phosphate battery technology, these forklifts have been used in various parts of the world and are well-known for their efficiency in energy consumption yet still being to get the job done without a hitch.

Finally, BYD will likewise be rolling out the Skyrail, an electric train that will ply certain routes in various parts of the country. With all these, it looks like Filipinos are in for an electrifying future, whatever form of transport they choose.
