Most people know the Toyota Corolla as a no-nonsense sedan. Yet Toyota diehards are aware that the erstwhile nameplate has had a few exciting examples, such as a two-door coupe and a hatchback or liftback. The 1980s, in particular, saw then Toyota distributor Delta Motor Corporation bring in a three-door Liftback, followed by a 5-door version for the succeeding generation.
So yes, the Corolla Hatchback is nothing new to the Toyota faithful. Which is why the upcoming 2019 Corolla Hatchback is a big deal for Toyota. Set to debut at the 2018 New York Auto Show, the five-door trunkless Corolla that rides on the brand’s New Global Architecture platform is longer, wider, and lower than its predecessor. That front end, in particular, adds to the sporty vibe.
Inside, the cabin is more spacious with a host of piano and matte finished surfaces that give it a more upscale appearance and feel. A new dash with 8-inch touchscreen interface dominates the upper center console, akin to most cars today.
In the North Mercian market where it will be initially sold, the new Corolla Hatchback will be powered by a 2.0-liter direct-injection four-cylinder gasoline mil. While output figures were not disclosed just yet, Toyota did say that this lump will be potent and efficient at the same time. It will be mated to a 6-speed manual or continuously variable transmission.
