Since early 2016, the Genesis brand has been churning out offerings that are aimed squarely at the likes of Lexus, Acura, and Infinti. Yet besides these three premium Japanese makes, Hyundai Motor Company’s luxury arm has not been shy about saying that it is ready to do battle with the Germans. Nowhere is this more evident than the new Generis G70.
The D-segment fighting G70 is a midsize sedan that is poised to challenge the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and BMW 3-Series. To do this, it offers sophisticated style, advanced technology, and a wealth of cutting-edge safety kit.
The car’s styling is dominated by creases, curves, and angles for a dynamic look. The front end prominently displays the hexagonal mesh grille with the Genesis wing logo placed on top. It is flanked by a sleek set of upswept headlights and LED daytime running lights, along with large bumper-mounted air intakes and foglamps underneath.
The car’s profile dons the long hood, short trunk look, complemented by sharp creases and character lines. The broad shoulders also add to this sophisticated yet dynamic vibe. And the rear boasts C-shaped LED taillights and rounded exhausts tips that follow the shape of the compact bumper.
Just like the outside, the cabin is a mx of sophistication and top-notch materials. Aluminum, leather, and quilted surfaces are the dominant theme in here. The Korean luxury carmaker also says it used a lot of soft touch materials in various places. Plus, there is a large touchscreen infotainment screen sitting atop the dash that features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink, and Kakao L, which is a server*based voice recognition system that will be available on Korean cars for the first time.
The Genesis G70 will be offered with a trio of engines—two turbocharged gasoline and one turbodiesel. The gasoline variants consist of a 252hp, 353Nm 2.0-liter four-cylinder, or a 3.3-liter V6 with 370hp and 510Nm. The lone diesel lump, on the other hand comes straight from the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento and dishes out 200hp and 441Nm of torque. Power, by the way, is sent to the rear wheels—just like the best sports sedans out there.
And just like its larger G90 and G80 siblings, the Genesis G70 boasts a slew of advanced safety gear. The grand’s own Genesis Active Safety suite or Genesis Smart Sense includes driver aids like Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Blind Spot Collision Warning, Driver Awareness Warning, and an active hood that is designed to be pedestrian friendly.
The Genesis G70 can now be ordered in its South Korean home market. Other countries will follow in 2018.
