Safety for both motorists and pedestrians is among the top issues concerning the motoring industry worldwide. In fact, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2015 Global Status Report on Road Safety stated that an average of 1.2 million people die each year due to road traffic accidents, with most reports coming from middle to low-income countries like the Philippines.

In our country alone, the report said that around 53% of road crash deaths are reported to involve 2-wheeled vehicles like bicycles and motorbikes. With the evident rise in popularity of such machines since the mid-2000s, the local motoring industry saw the need to step up its road safety training for riders, drivers, and even pedestrians in some way.

As a result, many companies took the initiative to help reduce the number of road crash fatalities, and one of them is the Honda Safety Driving Center (HSDC) which is now celebrating its 10th year in the industry.

The HSDC was founded in 2008 and was made possible by the collective efforts of Honda’s business units here in the Philippines. These include the Honda Philippines, Inc. (HPI), Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), and the Honda Parts Manufacturing Corporation. It’s the country’s first motorcycle riding school to also implement training programs for 4-wheeled machines and trucks.

Through the years, HSDC has achieved numerous feats to elevate the level of safe rider and driver training in the country. These include training school accreditations from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and TESDA. It also gained high grounds in Japan when it beefed up the skills of its trainers to conduct programs related to truck driving.

Of its training courses, HSDC is known for programs like the One Honda Road Safety Campaign; a road safety initiative between Honda’s 3 business units in the Philippines and motorcycle advocacy groups like the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA) and Road Safety for Children; a campaign to instil the discipline of road safety for kids. It also conducts Road Safety Education seminars for motorcycle clubs.

For 2018, HSDC launched new programs as part of its 10th year anniversary celebration. These are the Basic Group Riding Course, Big Bike Safety Riding Course, Executive Driving Course, and Kids on Safety. In a nutshell, all these focus on 3 goals; save lives, reduce injuries, and make a better rider/driver out of its students.

The Honda Safety Driving Center is located along the South Superhighway, #17 East Service Road, Parañaque, Metro Manila. For inquiries, you may reach out to its landline number (02) 581-6700 or mobile number 09178846632. You may also log on to Honda Philippines, Inc.’s official website.
