Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI), the official distributor of Hyundai vehicles in the Philippines, highlighted the empowerment of women as part of its participation in the recently concluded ASEAN 50 Summit.

This came after its President and CEO Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo joined a group of women dignitaries in the ASEAN Business & Investments Summit (ABIS), a related event of the ASEAN 50.

Running under the theme “Unleashing Women Economic Power and Human Capital Development (Investing in Education, Global Competencies, Women and Affirmative Action)”, the said event discussed the important role of women in the positive and inclusive growth the ASEAN region.

In summary, the event concluded with the delegates creating a solid understanding and agreement that the ASEAN would serve as a valuable starting point for empowering women. Moreover, they agreed that women can also have the capacity and the skill to lead and boost the economy, granted that they be given equal opportunities.

But these understandings and agreements also come with certain realities. The most prominent of which is the amount of work to be done in order to change the society’s thinking about women in general in terms of leadership or undertaking important roles. These can only be done through proper education, information dissemination, and the creation of numerous policies that promote gender equality and discourage discrimination on both men and women.

“As regards the operational environment, we need to enhance financial literacy and the nurturing of talent to run businesses. As regards an enabling environment, we need to explore ways to collaborate—share best practices, even the most disruptive and unconventional ones-- in order to learn and benefit from digital disruption, in order to contribute in a relevant way to the region’s sustainable development goals,” said Agudo.
