When it comes to midsize sedans, the Nissan Altima seems to play catch-up to models like the Toyots Camry and Honda Accord. Well, it looks like Nissan wants to change this as it introduces a sharper and more tech-savvy sixth-genneration Altima at this year's New York Auto Show.

The Big Apple debut sees a car that takes its styling cues straight from the VMotion Concept car. The grille and sharp  headlights are the most telling. These complement the sleek lines and overall dyanamic profile.  This can be sen in the broad shoulders and overall proportions which are now longer, wider, and lower for a more aggresive stance

Inside, designers gave the Altima a slimmer dash that allow for a more spacious cabin. This gets a standard 7-inch floating toucchscren with an 8-inch display as an otpion. It gets a slew of connectivity options, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Apple smartphone-compatible remote for the doors and engine start, among others.

Apart from the looks, another notable change can be seen in the engine bay. Nissan has put in its 2.0-liter Variable Compression motor that produces a heady 248hp and 370Nm--figures akin to the outgoing V6. This mill is said to be more fuel efficient. There is also a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that puts out 188hp and 244Nm of torque--a jump from the current model.

Both mills are mated to the Xtronic CVT, while an all-wheel drive system is now available for the first time. Oddly, it only comes with the 2.5-liter lump.

Nissan has likewise packed the Altima with a slew of safety tech from its Intelligent Mobility suite. It gets stuff like forward collision warning, automatic emegency braking, and Intellignet Driver Alertness, among others. The Altima will also come with Rear Automatic Braking and ProPilot. The latter allows semi-autonomous driving and keeps the car in one lane even in stop-and-go traffic.

The new Nissan Altima will go on sale later this year. It would be interesting to see how it stacks up against the equally new Toyota and Honda sedans.
