Subaru Debuts the Ascent Three-Row SUV

Remember the Subaru Tribeca? Car nuts may recall Subaru’s foray into the three-row SUV segment sometime in 2006 til around 2014. With the category’s renewed vigor, however, Subie wants to play the game once again as it debuts the all-new Ascent at the ongoing Los Angeles Auto Show.

What was previously seen in concept form at this year’s New York International Auto Show now finds its way to the production floor. The production version retains the concept’s clean lines, looking much like a larger Forester. This one, though, gets more masculine fenders and other cool touches.

While the outside may look nondescript, the cabin receives a more premium vibe. Available in either eight- or seven-passenger layout (with the latter getting a pair of captain’s chairs), buyers will revel in luxuries like tir-zone automatic climate control, eight USB ports, as well as 19 (yes, you read that right) cupholders.

Underpinned by the new Global Platform that is found on the Impreza and new XV, the Subaru Ascent will be powered by the Japanese carmaker’s new 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer four-cylinder motor that puts out 260hp and 375Nm. The mill is paired with an updated Lineartronic CVT with eight simulated gears. Needless to say, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is part of the mix.

The new Subaru Ascent will go on sale in the North American market in the third quarter of 2018
