Dubai is known the world over for being one of the richest oil producing countries. It made its fortune by producing and selling oil to pretty much every oil-dependent nation. So it comes as a bit of a pleasant surprise to find it investing in electric cars like Tesla for its taxi fleet.
Last September, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority took delivery of an initial fleet of 50 units of Tesla Model S and X for its Dubai Taxi Corporation. As a follow up, Uber Dubai will soon be rolling out a fleet of Tesla Model S and Model X cars and crossovers as part of its UberONE service.
With a base fare of Dh10, customers can ride in serene electric comfort for around Dh1.9 per kilometer. Uber says this is comparable to the ride-sharing service’s own Uber Black. The Tesla vehicles, however, have a few distinct advantages over their regular gasoline counterparts. Besides boasting cutting-edge designs and tech, these vehicles are fully electric. This means riders and driver partners get around without adding to global warming. And they do so in total silence.
Dubai is one of only a few cities around the world that offer EVs as a taxi or ride-sharing means of transport. It’s their way of helping to reduce their carbon footprint.
