A lot of automotive publications and motoring journalist organizations give out various awards in recognition of the products churned out by the automotive industry. But have you ever wondered what THE World Car of the Year is? For this year, it is the Volvo XC60, with the award being handed out at this year’s New York Auto Show that began last March 28.

The win of Volvo’s latest midsize SUV is a first for the Swedish carmaker in this prestigious tilt. It also comes at the heels of the same vehicle winning the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year prize earlier this year.

The World Car of the Year group recognized the Euro NCAP-topping safety systems such as the City Safety with Autonomous Emergency Braking with Steering Support that is a further evolution of the already innovative driver assistance system. Apart from this, the lineup of diesel and gasoline engines, along with the T8 Twin Engine hybrid drive was likewise cited as other innovative features.

The win also comes after the smaller XC40 bagged the European Car of the Year award at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.
