It’s no secret that the Hyundai Accent has grown to be a lot more stylish with every new generation. Since its introduction in 1994, the subcompact Korean has morphed from a mundane econobox to a rather sleek number. And now, the fifth-generation model has finally come out at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.
The all-new Hyundai Accent is a further evolution of the brand’s design language, seen from its signature cascading grille, dominant character line, sweeping roof, and equally stylish rear end. Available in both four-door sedan and five-door hatch, the latest Accent is longer and wider, with an increased wheelbase. It does, however, retain its height for a low-slung and sporty stance.
Beneath the swooping flanks lies a cabin with a more upscale vibe. Materials are more premium as area available and 7-inch TFT LCD displays that let drivers know of what’s going on with their vehicle. Adding to the modern and big car feeling is the increased space.
At launch, the Hyundai Accent can be had with an updated 1.6-liter Gamma gasoline direct injection (GDI) four-cylinder with 132hp and 161Nm of twist. Mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, the new Hyundai subcompact promises improved fuel efficiency and better driving performance. The latter is ensured by an available Drive Mode Selector that allows drivers to choose between Normal and Sport Modes. The second setting seems to work, as Hyundai says in-ger acceleration has been improved, with 40-80kph coming in faster by 0.2 seconds while 80-120kph can be achieved 1.3 seconds quicker than before.
Besides better performance and a more upscale touch, the latest Accent comes with a suite of safety and comfort features to put it above its peers. Stuff like six airbags, vehicle stability management, electronic stability control, traction control, and autonomous emergency braking are all there for total peace of mind. The body is likewise lighter yet more rigid, thanks to the extensive use of high-strength steel. And goodies like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with heated seats keep passengers connected and comfy.
The fifth-generation Hyundai Accent sedan will go on sale globally in the third quarter of this year. The hatchback will follow before the year ends.
