Modern-Day Pocket Rocket: The 400hp Audi RS3 Sportback is a Compact Car Like No Other

When Audi adds the letters RS to its offerings, you can be sure it will be something special. The latest Audi RS3 Sportback, which follows the release of the RS3 Sedan last year in Paris, is no exception. In fact, it actually belies its compact car classification.

The engine, for instance, is touted to be the most powerful five-cylinder in the industry. The 2.5-liter TFSI five-pot motor puts out 400hp and 480Nm and is mated to a 7-speed S-tronic dual clitch gearbox. This is enough to power the compact hatch from rest to 100kph in just 4.1Audi RS 3 Sportback. Top speed is limited to 250kph, though Audi will happily increase this to 280kph, if owners so request.

Apart from the straight line speed, responsive and dynamic handling is promised by the Quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. The electrohydraulic multi-plate clutch varies power distribution between front and rear axles. The cool thing about this system is that it will become more biased towards the rear as the drive becomes a lot sportier. Speaking of sporty driving, Audi Drive Select allows drivers to customize settings for engine management, the S-tronic transmission, the optional RS sport suspension, and even the exhaust flaps, toggling between comfort, auto, and dynamic. There is also a sport mode that’s tuned specifically to deliver the trademark RS drive.

In typical Audi fashion, the RS3 Sportback has some tweaks that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. The ride height, for instance, is 25mm lower than the standard A3, giving it’s a sportier stance and better handling characteristics. This is complemented by a wider front track, as well as large 235/35R19 tires. Customers can likewise specify carbon ceramic brakes up front to ensure optimum stopping force in extreme driving.

And of course, no RS treatment would be complete without stuff like the distinctive Audi Singleframe with gloss black honeycomb grille, standard LED headlamps (matrix LED as an option) the RS rear spoiler, diffuser insert, and RS-style oval tailpipes. These are matched by a cabin with the signature Audi fit and finish, along with goodies like the trademark red instrument gauge needles, an oil thermometer, boost pressure indicator, lap timer, and the RS screen. It’s all meant to enhance the overall driving experience.

The new Audi RS3 Sportback will have its world premiere at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March. Market launch follows in April of this year, under the Audi Sport brand.
