As the world shifts towards clean energy vehicles, Hyundai is doing its part by showing off its own version of a Fuel Cell Vehicle. The still unnamed offering will come in the popular Sport Utility Vehicle or crossover form.
Taking its cue from the ix35, the Fuel Cell SUV will reportedly have a range of 805kms. This addresses the usual range anxiety that plagues most FCV offerings. This is made possible by three equally sized hydrogen tanks that will store the fuel source before converting it to electricity.
The crossover’s styling influence comes from the FE Concept’s, which was first seen at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Unlike the current ix35 FCV, which is a spin-off of its gasoline counterpart, this one is designed to be a fuel cell vehicle from the ground up.
The upcoming fuel cell crossover is slated for production next year and is part of the Korean carmaker’s strategy to field around 31 hydrogen, electric, and hybrid vehicles by the year 2020. This will give consumers around the world a choice of which energy source they wish to power their vehicle. At present, Hyundai offers the Ioniq hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric models to rival the likes of the Toyota Prius.
Hyundai will likewise bring out a crossover version of the Ioniq to cater to those folks who want what the car has to offer yet yearn for that SUV vibe.
The Hyundai Fuel Cell SUV will hit the market next year.
