At this year’s Singapore Motor show, Subaru, through its Asian distributor Motor Image, unveiled a refreshed version of the current-generation Outback. While it may only have been a mid-life refresh, Subaru says that the updates are more than just skin deep.
Sure, the front end looks different, thanks to the new hexagonal grille and revised bumper design. The turbine-style rims finish off the look, giving the car a more sophisticated yet rugged demeanor.
The cabin is another place where Subaru put in a lot of new features to improve comfort and convenience. New USB ports are available in the rear center console. These allow backseat occupants to easily connect their gadgets and sync them with the improved infotainment system. Of course, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ensure that doing so is a cinch.
While it is still powered by the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, Subaru says that this mill has been improved for better response and fuel efficiency. Little bits like a new alternator help reduce weight, helping with the fuel savings.
Speaking of power and economy, Subaru also claims that the updated Continuously Variable Transmission with 7-speed manual mode gives drivers more control. Apart from this, the new tranny is also quieter, adding to the premium vibe.
But probably the biggest new addition to the Subaru Outback has to be EyeSight. The new driver assistance system ensures that one keeps out of harm’s way by stepping in to help drivers avoid a mishap. The suite of safety gear includes:
- PreCollision Braking: warns the driver via audible and visual warnings if an obstacle is in his or her way, and applies the brakes if no action is taken
- PreCollision Throttle Management: cuts engine power if an obstacle is dectected in front of the vehicle
- Adaptive Cruise Control: helps keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front
- Lane Sway warning: helps avoid swaying out of one’s lane
- Lane Departure Warning: warns the driver if he or she has drifted from the lane
- Lead Vehicle Start Alert: warns the driver if the vehicle in front has begun moving forward—usually when stopped at a traffic light or intersection.
