In 1955, Jaguar rolled out the very first D-Type, a race car that helped bring the British carmaker acclaim in the world of motorsport. Built between 1955 and 1957, Jaguar had originally planned to put together 100 D-Types. Yet as history tells us, it only ended up assembling 75 examples.
Well, it looks like this chapter in Jaguar Land Rover’s colorful past isn’t quite over. At least that’s what Jaguar Land Rover Classic is trying to tell us as it recently unveiled the new Jaguar D-Type. Set to be built at Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works in Warwickshire, the 2018 model will adhere to strict period-correct specifications.
With just 25 copies set for production, customers can choose between the 1955 Shortnose or 1956 Longnose. Either way, these cars will be powered by a six-cylinder XK motor. And each one will be built to exact specifications reflecting the era.
For the uninitiated, the Jaguar D-Type won the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans three times between 1955 and 1957. Just like the six Lightweight E-Types from 2014-15 and XKSS models of 2017-18 that were built by Jaguar Land Rover Classic, the new reincarnation, though only in limited quantities, continues this tradition and fulfills the British marque’s wish to come up with 100 exotic examples of this iconic race car.
