Back in 2016, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) showcased a concept vehicle at the Philippine International Motor Show that brought a funky yet sophisticated vibe to the Multi-purpose Vehicle crossover segment, the XM Concept. Around a year later, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation unveiled the production version of that vehicle that we all know today as the Mitsubishi Xpander.
After more than a month of teasers and special previews, the eagerly anticipated Xpander makes its official debut in the country. Held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, the Xpander retains most, if not all of the styling cues of the concept car. These include the funky-looking front end with upswept daytime running lights, the bumper-mounted headlights and foglights, and of course, the Dynamic Shield fascia.
The side likewise retains the upswept rear quarter window, blacked-out accent, and dual character lines. And the rear is likewise stylish with L-shaped pillar-mounted tail lamps.
Just like the outside, the cabin gets a host of premium touches like a large infotainment touchscreen display mounted atop the center stack, Just like most MPVs, there are rear-mounted ceiling vents that keep tings cool. Higher spec variants also get a pushbutton starter, while the Xpander is the only MPV in its class to feature fold-flat third-row seats.
As mentioned in previous teasers, the Xpander is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline mill with MIVEC variable valve timing technology. Rated at 105hp and 141Nm of torque, it courses power to the front wheels via either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox.
