Since it was launched in the mid-90s, the Honda CR-V has set the bar for compact Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs). The easy-to-drive nature, coupled with a car-like demeanor, and all-weather capability have made all four generations a winner both here and abroad.
But while no one was looking, Honda Motor Company unveils a new, fifth-generation Comfortable Runabout Vehicle. The all-new 2017 model now sports a bolder stance with new premium features and, get this, a turbocharged mill.
The look begins with sleeker LED headlamps on top-spec variants. These are enhanced by LED daytime running lights, that signature Honda grille, and a sophisticated front bumper design. The long hood, muscular fender flares, newly-styled 17- and 18-inch alloys, and twin tailpipes all complement the latest iteration’s svelte lines. That last bit actually gives a hint of what lurks under that longish bonnet.
We refer to the new 1.5-liter DOHC direct-injection turbocharged motor. Unlike its Civic cousin, this application sees an increase in output to the tune of 190hp. Those that are happy with less power can opt for the 2.4-liter DOHC i-VTEC naturally-aspirated mill that is tuned more for fule economy. Both powerplants are paired with a Continuously Vairable Transmission (CVT) with G-Shift control. Just as before, the CR-V will be offered in both front- and all-wheel drive.
The 2017 Honda CR-V looks to once again raise the bar by putting forward a premium yet still affordable package. The cabin materials used are of the highest quality. Then there are goodies like the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display powered by the Android operating system. The system now boasts a physical volume control as well as Honda-liked navigation. Other niceties include an electronic parking brake, remote engine start, active grille shutters up front for better aerodynamic efficiency, hands-free power tailgate operated by a kicking motion, and a whole lot more.
With the CR-V being, first and foremost, a family hauler, safety is naturally of the highest order. The Honda Sensing suite of protective gear s thrown in with such aids as Collision Mitigation Braking, Forward Collision Warning, pedestrian detection warning, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, and auto high-beam headlights, among others.
The 2017 Honda CR-V will be available stateside at the end of this year. We can expect it to hit local shores sometime next year.
