Compact SUVs are a dime a dozen nowadays. Their car-like driving dynamics coupled with versatility, a command driving position and higher ground clearance makes them a more tempting proposition than your average sedan.
But alas, their seemingly capable appearance and all-wheel drive hardware doesn’t exactly equate to being a mountain goat. In fact, most CUVs are better left on pavement and in the city. The most action they would probably see is a flooded street during a torrential downpour.
There is, however, one new offering that can probably change all that. The Jeep Renegade is the American off-road specialist’s very own take on the compact ute. And now, Filiipinos can finally experience the rugged yet still urban chic demeanor that the Renegade offers. The look alone is a mix of legendary Jeep styling cues in the Wrangler mold, interspersed with modern touches that won’t look out of place in the Metro’s posh nightspots.
Being a Jeep, 4x4 hardware is definitely part of the package. Selec-Terrain allows the driver to choose between Normal, Snow, Sand, and Mud so he can play in the rough stuff to his heart’s content. The intelligent 4x4 system can transfer all the 250Nm of torque to the rear wheels at a whim’s notice while the disconnecting rear axle and power take-off ensure optimum traction on any surface without compromising on-road performance.
Speaking of performance, the 1.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder turbo motor is capable of dishing out 160hp for the best balance of power and fuel efficiency. And the little Jeep is the first in the segment to offer a nine-speed automatic transmission.
Since this is a modern SUV, connectivity and that cool factor are of the essence. The UConnect infotainment system keeps you in touch with the world even on the move. And that large full-color instrument cluster gives the driver all the info he needs at a glance. It’s even customizable, too.
The Jeep Renegade made its Philippine debut at the recent 6th Philippine International Motor show. It will soon be available at your favorite Jeep dealer.
