The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has always been considered as the pioneer when it comes to vehicle technology. We don’t just refer to the German carmaker’s model range, but to the automotive landscape as a whole. In fact, it has often been said that if you want to see what kind of tech will be mainstream in around 10 or so years, simply check out the latest S-Class.

Well, Mercedes-Benz once again shows the way with the latest-generation S-Class. This newest number isn’t merely a refresh as Mercedes-Benz puts a slew of goodies into the car to make it one of, if not the most cutting-edge models to date. The front section, for instance, receives a new set of grilles. The six- and eight-cylinder versions get three twin louvers with vertical strips in gloss black, while the V12 and long-wheelbase variants get vertical chrome strips. There is now even a Maybach logo for that true status symbol.

The new S-Class likewise sports larger air intakes in the front bumper for a more aggressive stance. This matches the new-look MultiBeam headlamps that not only turn night into day but give the car a light signature all its own. These are matched by crystal-effect LED taillights and more pronounced exhaust tips out back.

What really sets the S-Class above its peers in the segment is the cabin. Only the finest materials, such as open-pore wood veneers, a pair of 12.3-inch widescreens with virtual displays, and swipe controls on the steering wheel are just some of the touches that make the car truly unique. Moreover, ambient lighting with up to 64 colors make for a customized ambience while in the car.

Speaking of cabin mood, the Energizing Comfort Control makes its world debut in the new S-Class. Utilizing various systems such as climate control, seat heater, massage, ventilation, and even the aforementioned ambient lighting, occupants can choose the type of mood and wellness settings they desire while riding in their S-Class. These settings include Freshness, Warmth, Vitality, Joy, Comfort, and Training. In short, one can program the cabin’s ambience to suit one’s mood and needs and come out energized and refreshed from the journey.

At launch, buyers can choose between various engines that provide optimum performance and fuel economy. The S350D 4Matic, for instance, gets a 3.0-liter inline-6 with 286hp and 600Nm of torque, while the S400D 4Matic receives the same displacement mill but with added punch at 340hp and 700Nm. Gasoline choices include the S560 4Matic with a 4.0-liter V8 putting out 469hp and 700Nm, and the S63 4Matic with the same 4.0-liter V8, but with a whopping 612hp and a staggering 900Nm of pulling power.

Of course, the engine choices won’t stop there. Mercedes-Benz plans to field a host of engines with six-, eight cylinders, and even a plug-in hybrid with some 60kms of driving range in full electric mode.

While these cutting-edge mills are still in the pipeline, Mercedes-Benz gives owners a host of innovations here and now. One of these is the Concierge Service for Mercedes Me, which offers things like restaurant reservations, info about the latest sporting events, tourist attractions, and navigation directions—all while in the vehicle.

Then there is the most advanced set of driver assist systems, collectively known as Intelligent Drive. The suite of smart mobility and guidance systems moves the S-Class closer to the realization of an autonomous vehicle. The guidance systems include Distronic Active Proximity Assist, Active Steer Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist, Following Vehicles Assist, and Traffic Sign Assist, just to name a few. All these, in conjunction with the MultiBeam headlamps, make driving truly safe and stress-free, even at night.

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class makes its world debut at Auto Shanghai 2017. Market launch and sales begin in July.
