Volkswagen Gives Families a New Way to Travel with the Atlas

While Volkswagen has a pair of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) in its lineup, namely, the Tiguan and the Touareg, the German brand has been missing out on an important and lucrative segment—the midsize seven-seat SUV market.  The US, for instance, is dominated by this class, with the likes of the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander. So now, Volkswagen wants a slice of the hot-selling pie.

The new VW Atlas enters the scene via a launch event held recently at the Santa Monica Pier, at the end of historic Route 66. The venue is fitting, as VW wants to open a new chapter in its long and colorful history. Apart from seling the iconic Beetle and Golf, the new 5,037mm long, 1,979mm tall, and 1,768mm wide Atlas is arguably one of the largest midsize vehicles in its class.

The look is accentuated by the LED headlamp with LED daytime running light treatment up front that gives it a stunning demeanor. This is made even more interesting with the side profile and the equally visually-stunning rear LED lamps. The overall look is simple yet still striking—pure VW.

Inside, the signature VW simplicity and functionality take center stage. Volkswagen promises more than enough room for seven adults and their gear. The driver, meanwhile, is treated to an Active Info Display that allows one to customize the data shown for an easier and less distracting yet still informed time at the wheel.

Speaking of information, the latest in-car entertainment and connectivity is made possible thanks to Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink. This means you can hook up your device, no matter what OS you’re using. And of course, a wealth of comfort and convenience features will be available as standard or optional extras.

The new VW Atlas will be powered by either a 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder that is good for 238hp, or a 3.6-liter V6 in the VR6 variant that puts out 280hp. Each of these mills course their juice through an eight-speed auto and available 4Motion all-wheel drive. Those folks that don’t really need al-wheel traction can opt for the more efficient front-wheel drive layout.

Being a VW, safety is high on its list of priorities. This is why one can order stuff like Forward Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Automatic Emergency Braking. There is even an available Post-Collision Braking system that applies the brakes when a crash is detected. This helps reduce the severity of the impact and help save precious lives.

The new Volkswagen Atlas will be built at the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. Sales in other markets outside the USA will commence sometime next year.
