The year 2016 was a banner year for Volkswagen, both here and abroad. Local sales reached some 1,060 units, making it the number 1 European brand in the country. This was matched by equally strong demand worldwide, with around 10.3 million VWs delivered, resulting in the brand topping the charts.
To highlight its achievements, Volkswagen Philippines hosted a Media Appreciation Night at the Atrium of the Enderun Colleges in McKinley Hill in Taguig. The auspicious affair was also a chance for VW Philippines to make some very important announcements involving the brand
First up was the change in management. Volkswagen Philippines now has a new President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Arthur R. Tan. Mr Tan, for those who are unaware, is the President and CEO of AC Industries, the parent company of VW Philippines. The change in leadership also signifies VW Philippines’ strong interest in pursuing further growth in the local automotive industry, backed by the strong support of Ayala Corporation and its subsidiaries such as AC Industrial.
Also on hand to grace the affair was Mr. Klaus Schadewald, Chief Operating Adviser of Volkswagen Philippines. He, together with Mr. Tan, highlighted the company’s impressive 2016 performance, as well as its plans for 2017. Thanks to continued demand for fine automobiles, along with a robust economy, VW Philippines was able to achieve its current top position.
Mr. Tan also took the opportunity to cite the contribution of former Volkswagen Philippines President and CEO, Mr. John Philip Orbeta. Under his leadership, the three-year old company was able to grow from a budding firm making a comeback into the local automotive scene into what it is today. It likewise witnessed a growing dealer network across the country—with eight new showrooms spread around the Philippines--, as well as the introduction of new models. The lineup now includes a complete mix, from the Polo, Jetta, Golf, to the Passat, Tiguan, Touran, and Touareg. The German brand has even brought in such icons as the Golf GTI and the world’s favorite, the Beetle.
As for what lies ahead in 2017, Volkswagen Philippines promises even more model introductions to cater to a wider audience. The commercial vehicle segment, for instance, seems ripe for models like the Caddy, Crafter, and the T6 Kombi (yes, another icon). There will likewise be new versions of their current lineup. And it will also dabble in the entry level market, bringing German engineering to the segment.
