Similar to the previous round, the dangerously heavy rain became the star of the show once more as the 6th round of the Petron FlatOut Race Series (FORS) went underway last August 11 at the 4.2 km-long Clark International Speedway (CIS) in Pampanga. A total of 104 drivers turned out for the day’s Time Attack and Grid Race events, each having to face the challenge of poor visibility and slippery race conditions.

As always, the race weekend was kept safe and organized by the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP). What’s more exciting at the time was the staging of the 2018 GiTi Formula V1 Race Challenge Round 2, this year’s Asian V8 Championship, and the debut of the Super Compact 1500 Class (a class exclusive for small cars with 1.5L engines).

Time Attack

Despite the treacherous weather condition, the morning’s Time Attack runs went underway. Rafael la O' established a “business as usual” momentum in Bracket R, which resulted to his 1st place win with a fastest lap time of 2.18.074. Gabby Sohu would claim 2nd fastest with his best lap time of 2:21.700.

In Bracket A, la O’ and Sohu led the time sheets again, this time with the latter taking 1st place. Jero Consing isn’t far behind either in 2rd place. Down in Bracket B, Aaron Lao made an astounding comeback to after a year’s absence to take 1st place. Gabby Sohu’s brother Raffy, would qualify 2nd fastest, while Ronn Catindig rounded off the podium in 3rd. In Bracket C, Douglas Maninding, Paul Santos, and Paul Ongcuangco completed the top 3 fastest drivers in that order.

Errol Panganiban kept a strong pace to win 1st in Bracket D, followed by Robert Tan in 2nd, and Avin Villaseñor in 3rd. As for Bracket E, Michael Anthony Ocampo, Royce Sarmiento, and Sherwin Bargos would become its fastest top three. Bracket F, meanwhile, saw JC Alberto establishing a commanding lead on the time sheets, followed by Allen Escoto in 2nd and Anthony Raymond Santos in 3rd. For Bracket G, the top 3 fastest drivers were Raymond 'Powee' Base, Alexis Khan Lavapie, and Ken Malang.

The round also featured time trial runs for the specialized Supercar Class. For this, Marbel Bayombong and his Nissan GT-R battled the elements to become the fastest. As for the 86 Class, Raffy Rabe dominated the field, while lady driver Gaby Dela Merced took control of the Asian V8 Championship.

Grid Race

By mid day, the rain caused by the southwest monsoon (habagat) didn’t show any signs of letting up. But this didn’t stop the combined Staunch Performance Grid D and SmartFuels 2 Race Grid E races from happening.

In Grid D, Paul Ongcuangco and Errol Panganiban had a blast, swapping places every now and then. But Ongcuangco would take the upper hand to claim 1st place. Adrian Lampano, meanwhile, settled for 3rd. Down in Bracket E, Felix Chua, Kody Ng, and JC Alberto were locked on a 3-way battle. In the end, the 3 drivers crossed the line in that order.

With the rain intensifying by the minute, the stewards deemed it too dangerous to hold the remaining grid races. As a result, Grids A, B, and C, were moved to the 7th round of the Petron FlatOut Race Series to be held on September 15, 2018 at the Batangas Racing Circuit.
