Ford Redesigns the Car Cabin to Accommodate More Gadgets

A recent study by Pew Research Center reveals that more Americans (and people, in general) carry around a mobile device or two. One out of three Americans, for instance, now have a smartphone, tablet, and portable computer. This equates to a 140 percent rise over the last three years. The study states that more folks also own stuff like e-book readers and portable gaming devices.

The problem with all this, studies show, is where do people stash these when in the car. Do they just leave them lying around? Ford proposes a solution via the redesigned interior of the new Fusion midsize sedan. No, it hasn’t exactly added more cubbyholes; it just made more efficient use of existing spaces.

For instance, Ford added around 59 percent more storage space, such as new phone pockets and coin holders. The center console now has 4 liters more room, thanks to a longer armrest and clamshell design. And there are now lighted USB ports under the equally large 8-inch touchscreen up front.

Taking a cue from Jaguar Land Rover, the shifter is now a rotary dial. This not only looks cool but likewise helps free up space in the console area. Even the cupholders are newly arranged to accommodate bigger drink sizes. Moreover, the entire arrangement makes for an airier feel throughout the cabin.

Could this be the interior of the future?
