The Lexus LS has always been considered as the most luxurious model in the range. It has practically set the benchmark for the brand throughout its almost 30-uear history. But somehow, Lexus wants to change this a bit and add a new attribute to the mix—sportiness. Enter the 2018 Lexus LS 500 F Sport.
The latest iteration’s coupe-like silhouette gets more dramatic with F Sport treatment on the front grille, rocker panels, and trunk moldings. The grille, in particular is a sportier interpretation of the trademark spindle grille design. This one took some five months to render using Computer Aided Design technology. The attention to detail is so great that designers used around 7,100 types of surfaces just to get the right texture.
The look is finished off by 20-inch alloys that add to the car’s sporty character. Plus, the LS 500 F Sport can be had in exclusive shades of White Nova or Heat Blue.
This being a Lexus means that the Omotenashi or Japanese hospitality principle is very much present in the cabin. The most luxurious touches that make the driver and passengers feel totally comfortable are part of the package. What sets this model apart are F Sport goodies like perforated surfaces on the front seats, scored aluminum trim, aluminum pedals, perforated shift knob, and ultrasuede surfaces on the seats and headliner.
More than exclusive amenities and trims, the Lexus LS 500 F Sport driver is treated to the LFA-inspired meter display, complete with movable meters and meter ring—just like in the supercar. And the interior can be specified in a racy Circuit Red hue for that ultra-sporty feel.
Based on an extended version of the Global Architecture for Large Sedans (GA-L) platform that’s derived from the LC 500 luxury coupe, the LS sedan, specifically the F Sport, gets its fair share of performance equipment.
At the heart of the LS 500 F Sport is a new 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 motor that puts out 415hp and 600Nm of torque. Mated to a class-leading 10-speed automatic, it allows the large sedan to sprint from 0-100kph in just 4.5 seconds. Buyers can likewise opt for the LS 500 F Sport Hybrid, with its Atkinson’s Cycle-equipped 3.5-liter V6, two electric motors, and compact lithium-ion battery. Mated to a planetary gear CVT and an additional four-speed transmission, drivers can go on full electric mode up to speeds of 140kph. This makes for truly efficient motoring.
But when it’s time to hit the open road or the twisties, drivers can be assured of total control with various driving modes at one’s beck and call. One can choose between Normal, Sport S, or Sport S+ modes to suit one’s style. Moreover, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management assures that all systems—steering, powertrain, braking, and suspension--will come together to give the ultimate driving experience.
The 2018 Lexus LS 500 F Sport makes its world debut at the upcoming New York International Auto Show, which will take place from April 14-23, 2017.
