While the Mazda MX-5 RF is just starting to make headlines here in the Philippines, it has already made big waves elsewhere around the world. Case in point; it recently took home the 2017 Red Dot Product Design Awards “Best of the Best” title, the same award its original roadster version received back in 2015.

The “Best of the Best” title is the highest Red Dot Product Design award given to an automobile. According to its organizer Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, this year’s Red Dot Design Awards was comprised of 39 judges who’ve chosen only 102 Best of the Best winners from an entry list of 5,500 models.

The Mazda MX-5 RF proved itself worthy of the title as its design has met the award-giving body’s criteria for judging. These include innovation, functionality, ergonomics, symbolic and emotional content, self-explanatory quality and ecological compatibility.

Having won the said title, the MX-5 RF joins the Japanese carmaker’s fleet of Red Dot Product Design awardees which includes the CX-3, Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6, and the original MX-5 roadster.

“The MX-5 RF’s retractable fastback design is unique because not only does it complement the already stunning lines of the KODO – Soul of Motion styling, it also provides an innovative package that efficiently combines a pure open-top driving experience with the practicality, comfort and security of a powered hard-top which many Filipinos have been waiting for in the MX-5,” says Steven Tan, President and CEO of Bermaz Auto Philippines, the exclusive distributors of Mazda vehicles and parts in the country.

Fresh out of its launching at the recently-concluded 13th Manila International Auto Show, the local-spec Mazda MX-5’s first batch of units were turned over to 11 proud owners during the last day of the said motor show. The car features a power hardtop that takes only 13 seconds to retract.
